More about Dallas; Dallas was my first Brittany. I picked her up in Strathmore where Lori was living. I recall carrying her on board the airplane in a cat carrier and she slept the whole way. I had a tough time picking her but in the end I went with the natural bob-tail. The name Dallas comes from a large orange patch on her side that resembles the State of Texas (to me anyway). Housebreaking was easy, but you really need to invest in a crate. Believe me, crate training is the kindest thing you can do for your dog. It will become their own space for the rest of their lives. I now have several, for sleeping and travel. Occasionally I even get to sleep outside my kennel. Over the next year Dallas trained her new owners pretty well. Anything left on the floor was hers to carry around, chew, and often eat. We lost a lot of socks, shoes and my wife's bra's were always popular. Dallas soon became "Bob's" dog since I took her everywhere and introduced her to fieldwork. She loves everyone in the family but there's no doubt who she really likes. Whenever she gets onto the bed she pulls the pillows and sheets around on my side and sleeps curled up next to my pj's. Dallas is very gentle but she is also very intense and very birdy. In the field or in wooded areas I keep a beeper collar on her because she has been known to "take-off". This is something Brittany owners often encounter and you don't want this to happen in an urban area. The good thing is that if you wait long enough they always seem to return to where you lost them. Dallas loves boats. She runs to the front, puts two paws on the bow and sticks her nose into the wind. I don't let her do this unless someone is holding her. She also loves to swim, and Brittany's can spend lengthy periods (especially in warm water) swimming around your canoe as you paddle the shoreline. Then you haul them aboard and they shower you. It is neat to see these younger pups point. Dallas naturally pointed flies, ants, butterflies, sticks, bumblebees and of course birds. When it came time to introduce real birds in the field she caught on quickly, with very little training. At 6 months and 1 day exactly she had her first FDJ leg. At a field trail last year she pointed a bird that was so far out I never found it. It wasn't till later when the bird planter told me she was locked on a Chukkar that was 40 metres upwind. Memo to self&ldots;.always trust your dog! I could go on but you get the picture. Dallas is as perfect a dog as I could ever have asked for. We are closely bonded and we know and trust each other, so training is smooth and progressive. She was a great mother to her first litter and I'm excited about the next, which should be born in June if all goes as planned. Watch the website for the puppies once they arrive. Regards, Bob Meanley, Coquitlam, B. C. |
