I had big plans for Kiddy's Field work! She won her Field Dog Junior Title in the 3 legs needed to get her title. I took her to her first day were she got a 93 1/2 out of 100. I was so happy that day to see her hit point at the first clump of trees and to find her first bird to her right under cover. She stayed on point will I was making a fool out of myself because I was so excited. I know then She had something special and I was planning to take her right to Field Dog Excellent in her future. But it wasn't meant to be after she was taken from me way to soon! Kiddy loved the water. Most of all she loved to get sprayed from the hose. It was a funny site to see.
We are thankful that we have 3 of Kiddy's Champion Daughters to have a litter from to carry on Kiddy's name!! One I own ( Dixie ) & Georgia owned by Geoff Allan & Rosalie owned by Christine Williams
Kiddy Produced only one litter but had 12 beautiful pups. 4 Became Champions with one of them winning 1999 Canadian National Brittany Specialty Best Puppy and he has his Field Dog Junior Title so far, Ranger.
We love you Kiddy !

Dear Lori:
It`s with a heavy heart and tearful eyes that I advise you of the sudden and unexpected passing of my best friend and faithful hunting companion, Chance on Dec. 10/2001
He had a tumor on his spleen which ruptured and caused him to bleed internally . He died within an hour. There was nothing the vet. could do for him. It all happened so fast, our family is devastated.
Only the week before we hunted pheasants for three days together ....he showed no sign of being ill then or on any of our 29 days of hunting this fall.
Some say your lucky to have one great dog in a life time. I believe I`ve had mine.
Yours in mourning
Lucky
My heart goes out to Dan & Dina in the loss of Chance & May he live in our hearts forever!

Born Sept 25 2001 - Jan. 29 2002
Owner Jackie Geddis of Fernie BC
Sire: 7x Best in Specialty Ch. Alar's the Rocketeer JH.
Dam: Int'l Ch./Can.Ch. Jayhawker's Dangerous Dixie
Toby has passed away after being attacked by a team of Husky crosses at only 4 months of age.
They tried to save his life with Blood Transfusions from a friends dog and they even called in a Human Dr. to help.
It was not his fault or his owners fault.
They was hiking on a trail at a ski hill that this team of Husky's was not suppose to be on. They saw the team coming and they called Toby to come and he came right away and sat by their side. But the Guy lost control of the team and they came right for Toby.
The Geddis Family is very upset . The Kids are taking it very hard.
My Heart goes out to them!

January 17, 2004 marked a very sad day for Rob and Jane Kerr as they said a final goodbye to their beloved Karma, who was taken from them at far to young an age from a pituitary gland tumor. Blinded by her disease, her ever faithful littermate Gabby became her "seeing eye dog". Rob loved to hunt with his "girls" and Karma was a true all-round dog - a great friend and a superb hunter who loved the water. Jane's lap is so empty without Karma on it.
We love you Karma and miss you very much.

This is a Warning to all Dog Lovers about Onions - It is suspected that Sassy passed away due to eating Onions that could have caused her to have Liver Failure.
It was a terrible shock to Joanne and Don. Sassy was Don 's fishing buddy and my constant companion. Don wants to remember Sassy as a spunky, sporty, happy little soul.
Here in part is a letter from Don.
" In early May of this year, I joined two friends from the coast for a 3-day camping and fishing trip at a local lake. Of course, Sassy went with me. While at the lake, she was her usual busy self--digging mice, chasing birds, etc. However, while there, she developed diarrhea and went off her food a bit. I attributed that to to her probably having ingested some lake water or eaten goose droppings and the like, as she never lost her desire to explore her environment as usual. Dr. Gummeson, the other partner, was doing surgeries that morning, and was prepared to do Sassy right away. We opted for the surgery. What Dr. G. found was totally unexpected. Sassy's liver was totally shot. The vets described it as looking like the liver of a chronic drunk in the final stages of cirrhosis. Sassy never recovered from the anesthic and died peacefully (we hope) between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m. on the 15th. Apparently, her liver was too far gone to remove the anesthetic from her system and she just slipped away.
What caused it? The lab tests described the affliction physically, in veterinary medical jargon, but were unable to suggest a cause.. However, Dr. A. tried to put it into plain English for us. All an individual's blood is filtered through the liver which removes many toxins. The liver is also a major organ in the replacement of red blood cells. Apparently, an animal can function quite well with only 30% of its liver intact, but below that, the general health of the individual can deteriorate quite rapidly. Apparently, Sassy's liver had been deteriorating, unbeknown to any of us, for quite awhile, and finally reached the critical stage in early May. Her regular annual checkups never revealed anything. A liver function test might have revealed an indication of the early onset of the condition. However, there's no reason to conduct such a blood test on an otherwise healthy animal. Even if we had discovered the problem earlier, it's debatable if the process could have been reversed short of a liver transplant.
But, what was the definitive cause? We'll never know for sure, but there are two possibilities. Firstly, according to Dr. A., it can be an heredity or congenital condition; or secondly, it could have been the result of some traumatic event in Sassy's life during the past few years. We suspect the latter, but can never be sure given the current level of veterinary knowledge. My reasons for saying that are as follows:
1. Presumably, a dog born with was is called a "shunt anomaly" (the lab report description) is, according to Dr. A., typically a slow developer, is lethargic, and generall "does poorly" all its life. That was definitely NOT Sassy! She was always a life-long busy missy--even the last morning (May 14) before we took her to the vet, she went on her mouse and gopher patrol in our back yard.
or 2 : Two years ago, Sassy was very sick with a condition known as "Heinz-body anemia", http://www.jlhweb.net/Boxermap/onions.html and http://www.petalia.com.au/Templates/StoryTemplate_Process.cfm?specie=Dogs&story_no=257 which causes a severe overbalance of white blood cells compared to red blood cells and apparently is an affliction of the spleen and/or pancreas. She got it from eating a large amount of fried onions 2 years ago this past February. In Feb. '02, the Fish & Game club to which I belong put on an ice-fishing day for the public at a local lake and I spent the afternoon helping kids catch fish. During that time, I left Sassy in my truck to keep her out of trouble. The club provided free refreshments, including hamburgers, hotdogs and fried onions to all participants. At the end of the day, after everyone else left, I decided to stay and catch a few fish to take home, so I let Sassy out for a run. She hung around me for awhile and then disappeared in the direction of the picnic area. She soon reappeared and greeted my with a face-wash. I noticed the smell of onions on her breath, but didn't think anything of it, because I didn't know at that time that onions are VERY TOXIC to dogs. I just assumed she had picked up some spilled onions onshore at the picnic area--no big deal. But it was a VERY BIG DEAL--about 3 days later, she was one sick little dog! Dr. A's preliminary blood work at the clinic, which was confirmed by the lab analysis, predicted either onion or Tylenol poisoning (which results in the condition called Heinz-body anemia). I was able to confirm that she had eaten onions. Presumably, if caught right away, there is treatment which can counteract the toxicity, but you have to catch it right away. Dr. A. warned us that there was a good chance that she could die at that time, but she didn't. She responded to the medications and apparently recovered. I subsequently checked with the club member who did the cooking that day and he confirmed that instead of taking the leftover fried onions home in the garbage, he had dumped them under a tree thinking that he was doing the wild birds and animals a favour.
We'll never know for sure whether or not it was the onions that eventually killed Sassy, but our suspicions strongly point that way. Dr. A. says that there is very little in the veterinary medical books about onion poisoning other than to describe it. Apparently, there's no information about what the long-term effects might be after a dog's apparent recovery, and nothing about its effects, if any, on the liver. Dr. A. says that in his own practice it has been his experience that the dog either died at the time, or recovered and lived an apparently normal rest of its life.
As I said, we can't prove that the onions eventually killed Sassy, but circumstances certainly point that way. Also, until Sassy got sick 2 years ago, I had absolutely no idea that onions were toxic to dogs and I've owned dogs all my life. I have since been warning all of my dog-owning friends of the hazard. I have yet to talk to a dog owner who was aware of onions' toxicity to dogs until I told them. .... It's too late for poor Sassy, but maybe it will save some other dog owners the grief that we"ve just gone through."

RAINBOW BRIDGE Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body begins quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Author unknown... |
